The Portland String Quartet - 50th Season

Welcome to the landmark 50th anniversary season of the Portland String Quartet and to this Portland Concert Series. To celebrate this milestone, the LARK Society for Chamber Music is now the Portland String Quartet Society. This change of name reflects more accurately the mission of the group - to promote and support the Portland String Quartet and to celebrate the remarkable achievements of this wonderful ensemble.

This season we welcome cellist Andrew Mark as the newest member of the Quartet. Andrew is no stranger to Portland audiences, having performed with the PSQ and VentiCordi Chamber Music, among other ensembles. And we thank Patrick Owen for his years of performing and wish him well in his new position on the faculty of the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan.

In celebration of its 50th Anniversary the Portland String Quartet has chosen a wide variety of masterpieces that exemplify its continuing programming philosophy. Additionally, the season features on each program one of our most beloved composers - Johannes Brahms - culminating with his powerful Piano Quintet and our exceptional guest artist, pianist Laura Kargul. You’ll notice the number “5” finding its way into the mix - the PSQ’s 50th Anniversary, a quartet from Haydn’s Op. 50, Mozart’s K. 464 being the 5th in a group of quartets dedicated to Haydn, Beethoven’s No. 5 from his set of Op. 18, Florence Price’s Five Folksongs and Brahms’s Piano Quintet.

This concert series, here at Woodfords Church, is rounded out as usual with performances by our dear friends VentiCordi Chamber Music and the Lantz-Kargul Duo. The PSQ’s annual educational lecture/performance event “Welcome to Chamber Music” will be held at Piper Shores in Scarborough on March 24th, 2019, and we hope to see you there.

There are also two important special events this season. On December 21st the PSQ will give a free Winter Solstice Concert at 5.30 PM at Mechanic’s Hall in Portland - “Giving BACH to Portland.” This concert, really a thank-you to Portland for supporting the Quartet, will feature the remarkable Art of the Fugue by Johann Sebastian Bach. And we hope you all will join us at the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Quartet on Friday, April 26th at 5.30 PM in the beautiful atrium at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute on Commercial Street. This promises to be a grand party!
